Opal Fossicking

At Opal House Quilpie, we appreciate that many of our visitors have a keen interest in finding their own special opal  treasure.
When we lived on site, we would take visitors to see first hand just where some of Australia's national gemstones were derived. It was always a thrill to see the depths that were dug beneath the desert sandstone, the opal formations still embedded in the rocks and also the boulders ready to be hit. Occasionally our visitors were privvy to witness the excitement as boulders were opened and faces of spectacular were then exposed. Chips might fly and glorious colours shine in the brilliant sunlight. It was amazing and then of course everyone would begin to guess the value of this newly found prize.

Visitors, would then fossick through the mullock and every find became a valuable treasure to remember the experience.

Nowadays, we still appreciate this desire for discovery is as strong as ever. We can't process everything, so we want you, our visitors to experience first hand the thrill of finding your own treasure.
We help you to learn a little of what we expect, in the unpredictable pursuit, and allow you time to collect your own specimens from rock we have brought back from the mine. Every piece has opal of some description in it. In some pieces the colour will open up to faces,  some will even sparkle, while yet others will have an array of lines and patterns,

Raw opal is a unique souvenir from Opal House Quilpie,
